My Awe Should Lead to Worship

I love thunderstorms, and we had a doozy a few weeks ago. I awoke to what initially seemed like flickering streetlamps but soon realized it was distant lightning. I jumped out of bed to let the dog out. Our Hermione is sweet, and also very particular; she holds strongly to the conviction that dogs do not go out to wet when the skies are dripping wet. I knew I had but a small window to get her out and done with business before the skies opened.

Mission accomplished, I then settled in with my coffee and Bible on the back porch to watch the show. Rain bucketed down, lightning and thunder were practically simultaneous. I thought of God’s great might and power. And then the wind came, driving the rain sideways. The flexible branches bent but did not break. And I had two thoughts. First, I need to renew my sense of awe in the Lord. It is way to easy for me to stress about work and family issues. Revelation 19:6 (NLT) pulls back the curtain of heaven, “Then I heard again what sounded like the shout of a vast crowd, or the roar of might ocean waves or the crash of loud thunder: Praise the Lord! For the Lord our God, the Almighty, reigns.”

Second, I need to remember that this great God Almighty is for me, God delights in me, he sings over me. Zephaniah 3:17 (NLT) promises, “For the Lord your God is living among you. He is a might savior. He will take delight in you with gladness. With his love, he will calm all your fears. He will rejoice over you with joyful songs.” My awe should lead to worship, singing praises to the One who sings over me, and who sings over you. What great love God has for his daughters.
